Twinsburg Township Square upgrades underway

Twinsburg Township Square will be closed through late October for electrical, irrigation and other infrastructure improvements.

The estimated $1.25 million project was approved by Twinsburg Township trustees this spring. The square is in the city of Twinsburg, northwest of state Route 91 and Route 82, but owned by the township.

“The board has worked for several years to review options for updating the Township Square,” said James C. Balogh, chairman of the Board of Trustees, in a news release. “The work is much needed and well overdue, and it will come out really nice in the end.”

Township Manager Rob Kagler said the money will come from the general fund. The township has contracted with Northeast Ohio Trenching Service but expects some cost savings by doing work “in-house,” he added.

“Pretty much, there's a lot of deferred maintenance,” Kagler said.

The decorative lights were installed about 25 years ago and the irrigation system, while functional, is a “hodgepodge,” he said. Renovations involve reconfiguring sidewalks and monuments to create a circular pathway that will highlight the area’s history and potentially attract more community events.

The square hosts various events throughout the year, including the city and township’s Winter Wonderland holiday celebration and the VFW’s Memorial Day services.

Joe Jasany, commander of VFW Post 4929, said this year’s Memorial Day parade will occur as usual and the service will be in front of the First Congregational Church, 9050 Church St., near the square. Church Street will be closed for the commemorations.

“We also have an Air Force C-130 plane scheduled to fly over the parade at 10:30 a.m.,” Jasany said in an email. "So look to the skies.”

The city of Twinsburg maintains Church Street, the surrounding streets and the perimeter sidewalks.

“The city is going to be doing its own improvements to streets and surrounding areas of properties,” Kagler said. “The township will be coordinating its work with the city as part of that process.”

The community responses to project plans have been “excited and positive,” he added. Design renderings can be found online at twinsburgtwp.com/TownshipSquareImprovements.aspx
